Millennium Youth CampMYC News - Mar 17, 2014

Congratulations, Millennium Youth Campers 2014!

The participants of the 2014 International Millennium Youth Camp have been selected and announced. In June the camp will bring together 60 gifted young students for a week of science, research, technology, fun and friendship!

The names of the 60 participants in the 2014 International Millennium Youth Camp have been officially published. In June 2014 these bright and talented science enthusiasts from all over the world will meet in Finland to work together on scientific challenges.

Besides the science, the 16 to 19 year-old campers will have plenty of chances to get to know each other and to enjoy leisure activities as well as the uniquely beautiful Finnish summer.

“I think that the Millennium Youth Camp was a lot more than just a science camp for me; it was a place to share knowledge and ideas, a place to work, to make research, to discover innovation, and also to have fun, go to sauna and get to know people from all around the world,” writes mexican Nidia Obscura Acosta, who participated in the camp last year. Nidia blogged about her Millennium Youth Camp experience on the Technology Academy Finland’s webpage.

In her opinion “one of the best things of the Millennium Youth Camp was that we were a multicultural group, so we always had something to learn from each other.”

At the camp a single table might sit teenagers from five or six continents. This year the campers represent 31 countries or nationalities. The 32 girls and 28 boys come from seven geographical regions: Africa (3), Asia (7), Europe (21), Near East (8), North America (6), South America (12) and Oceania (3).

This year South America came through very strongly with seven campers from Brazil, three from Argentina and one from Paraguay and Chile each.

Top level scientific experts will coach each theme group in their project work during the week. The campers will not only visit universities and research institutes but also get a feel of the business-side of science. The campers will be networking with innovative start-up companies as well as representatives of globally operating companies.

One of the most eagerly awaited events at the camp are the International nights, where the campers get to present their home countries and cultures through art, music, dance, drama, storytelling or anything they find fun and memorable.

It will be a week to remember!

Check out the list of campers on the Technology Academy Finland’s webpage.

The main organisers of Millennium Youth Camp are Finland’s Science Education Centre LUMA and Technology Academy Finland.

MyScience will introduce each of the 10 theme groups during the spring, and like during previous years offer news, photos, and videos from the Camp in June.
