Today, the names of the 200 young people, who got through to the second round of the MY Camp application process, were published at www.millenniumyouthcamp.fi. Is your name on the list?

The 200 young people aged 16 to 19 are from all over the world: 104 of them are from Europe, 51 from Asia, 19 from South America, 13 from Africa, 10 from North America, and 3 from Australia. The countries from which the highest number of applicants got through to the second phase are: Romania (24), and Brazil, China, Slovenia, Finland, and India, each having more than 10 applicants on the second round.

Among the 200, the 60 campers for MY Camp 2013 will be chosen. But first, they will have to do assignments based on their theme group of choice, and impress the MY Camp jury by their work.

For example, the applicants for the novel Biosciences and technology theme group have to first familiarize themselves with Dr. Shinya Yamanaka’s pioneering and Nobel and Millennium awarded work on recognising the genes that are responsible for cellular identity, and turning cells into induced pluripotent stem cells, and apply the gained knowledge in solving a rather imaginary problems involving a toothless little vampire…

The applicants for the Energy theme group are faced with a more tangible problem of solar power usage which has remained marginal in some countries and become more wide-spread in others. The applicants are asked to discuss the reasons behind that and analyse further an example from Espoo, Finland, where a solar energy map was drafted recently.

As for another popular theme group, Applied Mathematics, the applicants will have to delve into cryptography and its useful applications in information security.

Altogether, this year’s MY Camp will have the record number of 10 theme groups. The applicants accepted for the second round of the application process have until 18 February to finish their assignments, and the final decision on the Campers will be announced 15 March. MY Camp will be held in the capital region of Finland 9–16 June 2013.

MY Camp is arranged by Finland’s Science Education Centre LUMA and Technology Academy Finland in collaboration with various partners. For more information, visit: www.millenniumyouthcamp.fi and www.helsinki.fi/luma/english/millennium-youth-camp.
