Balloons and Hi-Tech

On Tuesday, MY Campers visited companies on Helsinki Metropolitan Area to learn about the Finnish expertise in the fields that are linked to the camp’s values that support the better and more sustainable future for all.

When Finnish expertise in technology comes up, the Finns and foreigners alike most likely first think of Nokia. So the Nokia Headquarters was a natural destination for Applied Mathematics and ICT groups.

However, a little more unknown but at least equally pioneering company in its own field, Vaisala, hosted the Climate Change group.

“Releasing the weather balloon, sonde factory, clean room,” the members of the group listed the best things after the visit. Vaisala is a company that studies, designs, and manufactures different measurement devices to be used for example in meteorology.

These devices are for environmental observation to improve the daily life but the measurements can be also used on a wider scale in climate change research to study the challenges of tomorrow.

One of Vaisala’s products is the weather radar on top of University of Helsinki’s Physics building, and the Campers got to hear more about the device, which is one of the radars Vaisala uses for research purposes, and has stood inside a big balloon since 2004.
