Climate Change: The effectiveness of carbon sequestration methods
Almost a month ago the Millennium Youth Campers presented their projects at MY Gala in the Museum of Technology. MyScience will now look back on the projects, based on each group’s project report, and present the posters the campers did for the gala.

The goal of the Climate Change group’s project was to determine the effectiveness of various methods of carbon sequestration. This is what they wrote in their report about the project.
“Carbon sequestration means directly removing carbon dioxide from atmosphere. It is an increasingly necessary alternative. More research would make carbon sequestration a safe and effective strategy that complements reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. After thorough research of economic viability and practicality of the methods we investigated. We concluded that reforestation was the most viable method of carbon sequestration.”
“The work was divided among each member of the group. Matthew McAteer researched reforestation. John Chen researched ocean iron fertilization. Kati Venho studied mineral storage of carbon dioxide, Paula Hietala worked on the combined photosynthesis and hydrogen production in algae as well as the binding of CO2 in a NaOH solution, Andra Orasanu worked on producing the report, poster and general additional information, and Bulana Nkosihona worked on the poster that was presented at the Museum of Technology.”
“During the project we learned many things about carbon sequestration. In addition to that we also learned how to coordinate a project such as this while we were in different parts of the world before the camp.”
“Among other things, this camp and project work has taught us:”
- How to cooperate and work in an international group.
- How to create a poster.
- How great minds think (after getting the chance to talk with the Millennium Technology Prize winners).
- Lots of things about different other cultures (in the International Evening).
- That at midnight it doesn`t have to be dark outside if you stay at Kiljava.
- How to work using an on-line platform.
- New things regarding climate change, robotics, low temperature and many others.
- What ”Kiitos” means.
